When it comes to Schoolwear, sizing can be confusing. We know that trying to figure out the correct size to order for your child
Isn’t always easy.
For primary school uniform sizes are most often in given in age; for secondary school uniform sizes are most often given in inches
of chest, waist, or length, depending on the garment.
We have made the following guide to try and make things as easy as possible for you when ordering online. It outlines how to
measure your child correctly and the best size for you to order accordingly.
Garments: Blazers, Jumpers, Cardigans, Girls Blouses, PE Shirts
An accurate chest measurement will reflect the fullest – or broadest – part of the torso. This is usually found by
starting your measurement from just below one armpit and then all the way around the body until the the tape
meets, keeping it taught and straight all the way around.
Garments: All
Height will affect your decision on everything you buy. If your child is a relatively average height for their age then it will be less of a consideration but if you have a child who is particularly short or tall when compared to the average for their age, or in proportion to their other measurements, this is when it will start to be a consideration. If this is the case height will be the best indicator when deciding which size to buy.
Garments: Trousers (L)
Leg length is important when ordering trousers that come in different lengths. For an accurate leg length measurement measure from the groin to the floor without wearing shoes.
Garments: Skirts (L)
Skirt length is important when ordering skirts that come in different lengths. For an accurate skirt length measurement measure from the waistline to the length required.
Garments: Skirts (L)
Dress length is important when ordering dresses that come in different lengths. For an accurate dress length measurement measure from the nape of the neck to the length required.
Garments: Trousers, Skirts, Dresses, Shorts, Skirts
Hips will affect your decision when buying if your child has particularly wide or narrow hips when compared to the average for their age, or in proportion to their other measurements. An accurate hip measurement will reflect the widest part of the pelvic region. The hip measurement is taken all the way around the body ensuring the tape remains taught and straight all the way around.
You can find some excellent video demonstrations on how to measure from one of our supplier on YouTube at:
Garments: Trousers, Skirts, Dresses, Shorts, Skirts
Now you have accurately measured your child you can use the guide below to see which size will offer the best fit for them. Please note that these sizes have all been generated with room for growth taken into account.
Remember that measurements are a more accurate guide than age when choosing a size, and that if your child is significantly above or below average size, height is the best guide when choosing a size.
If you are still in doubt we are able to offer excellent advice on sizing over the phone as well as instore so just give us a call and we will be more than happy to help you out!
Our aim is that you shouldn’t have to replace your uniform until it has been grown out of.
You can help us achieve this by taking our advice and by ensuring that items are washed and cared for in a way that will protect their integrity.
Fabric Conditioner
Please do not use fabric conditioner when washing your uniform.
Whilst fabric conditioner can be great, it is best not to use them when washing school uniforms for a few reasons.
Most uniform will be a mix of synthetic and natural fibres, often polyester and cotton.
When used on cotton in clothing, composed of fibres with a natural waxy layer, the additional layer of chemicals that fabric conditioner introduces to soften can actually cause the item to become stiff and loose its elasticity. Equally, fabric conditioner’s chemical compounds are electrically charged, fluffing up the
fibres. Whilst for items like towels this can help to keep them soft and fluffy, in the fibres fluffing up can present itself as pilling.
Equally, some items of uniform, such as wicking sportswear and ‘easy care’ garments, are designed with a
coating which fabric conditioner can break down or re-coat, reducing the properties intended of the
clothes.
Instead of fabric conditioner, softening tablets can be used to combat the effects of washing in hard water. Wool dryer balls can also help with this and can be help to reduce pilling. Very tightly balled tin foil (with no
sharp edges that could snag!) can do the same whilst also reducing static, whilst essential oils can be added to enhance the fragrance of your freshly cleaned washing.
Pilling/Bobbling
Pills are small bobbles of excess fibres that are brought to the surface of a garment through friction and/or heat.
Knitwear items are particularly prone to pilling as the fibres are less closely bound together by design, so can become loose more easily, however all items
with enough wash and wear can and will eventually pill.
Washing on a gentle setting at a low heat, as well as washing garments inside out, can help prevent pilling. Equally, hang drying items rather than tumble drying them, or tumble drying them on a low heat in a laundry bag can help avoid pilling. Making sure not to overfill your washer or dryer is also key as this will reduce the amount of abrasion your items face during wash. Velcro straps should all be fastened so they can’t damage other items.
Whilst pilling is often associated with well loved and worn items, the excess fibres in new clothes can mean that they are prone to pilling. If this does occur, it does not necessarily mean the item is faulty. Often after a few more washes the pills will themselves break down or break off. If not, the item can be depilled, leaving you with the item in a new condition minus the excess fibres. If you have a new item that has pilled, it may not be faulty. Please get in touch with us if you are note able to de-pill the item yourself or have any concerns and we can work out the best solution.
Shrinkage
Shrinkage occurs when the threads and yarns tighten together, compact, or the fibres themselves contract. Similarly to pilling, shrinkage is caused by heat and agitation, in addition to moisture. As such, the washing process poses the most threat of causing shrinkage in an item.
With many of our garments containing cotton, a material more prone to shrinkage, the majority are pre-shrunk. This means that they are treated or have undergone a shrinking process during manufacture in order to minimise its capacity for future shrinkage. However, this DOES NOT mean that they cannot shrink any further! In fact, it is an inevitability. Normal shrinkage for items is around 3% and is imperceptible.
Fortunately, preventing shrinkage is usually easy. Be mindful of the care labels and wash and dry on low heats. Air drying is always preferable if possible, but is also worth a go if you do feel an item is shrunk. If you stretch out an item when wet and hang to try then it is possible to reintroduce tension into items that can even reverse some shrinkage!
How do I know what size to order?
Whilst you can use our Size Guide to help you choose the correct size, this is very much what is says on the tin; a guide. It will give you an indication of sizing but different items- styles, brands and materials – will come up very differently from one another. The easiest way to know what size to get is to pop in and try the item on (including for Leavers Hoodies). However, if you are unable to do so, you can always Contact Us us for advice.
What is your return policy?
You can return an item to our shop or via post for a refund within 30 days, or for an exchange/credit outside of this (provided it is still eligible). Items must be resaleable, in any original packaging and with any original labels and tags.
For more details on our returns policy and how to return, please see our Returns page.
The size I need isn’t listed on your website; am I able to order?
We list all stock sizes online, whether we have them in stock in our stores, at our warehouse, or if they are available to order in. If our stock sizes do not include what you need, and you need a larger or smaller size, then please get in touch. If it’s possible to get then we can talk you through the wait time and ordering process, otherwise we might be able to suggest an alternative option.
When ordering I am asked if I would like personalisation; what do this mean?
Our personalisation usually means (unless explicitly stated otherwise) that your initials/name will be embroidered or printed to the front of the item.
For items such as polos where the personalisation will be opposite the logo to the chest, we are only able to personalise with initials, but for other items such as bags we can personalise with a full name.
Why is the price of the item more than on the website/list provided by the school?
The prices listed on the school main pages and any price lists distributed by the school are prices from, meaning the starting prices for the smallest size of that garment. The price may be slightly more if you have purchased a larger size.
Which schools do you stock?
We stock over 100 schools. Any of these can be purchased online, but only certain shops will service certain schools. Please see Our Shops for a full list of the schools/clubs each one stocks.
What are your opening hours?
We are open Monday-Saturday 9am-5:30pm all year-round. We generally close for Bank Holidays (except for the August Bank Holiday where we open on reduced hours!) and implement reduced hours over the Christmas holidays. We will always display reduced opening hours on our website Home Page.
Do you have parking?
All of our local shops are on High Streets and as such, whilst we have no dedicated parking, there are lots of options! For shop-specific advice please see Our Shops.
Do we need an appointment to come in?
We only run an Appointments service during our peak Summer season for those who would prefer to be prepared, but accept walk-ins all year round. You never need an appointment to come and shop with us.
Is there a uniform list/price list?
All uniform is listed on our website with pricing per size on the specific product page. Please note that the prices listed on the school main pages and any price lists distributed by the school are prices from, meaning the starting prices for the smallest size of that garment. The price may be slightly more if you have purchased a larger size.
Do I need an account to order?
You do not need an account to order, you can use guest checkout.
Having an account enables you to more easily view prior order so that you can know sizes purchased previously, helpful if, for example, sizing up or replacing a lost item!
Can I amend/cancel an online order?
It is not guaranteed but if you let us know, if we can we will!
Provided your item has not already been dispatched, or made if it was a special, personalised, or made-to-order item, we can cancel/amend your order. Contact Us if you’ve changed your mind or noticed a mistake with your order and we will always do our best for you.
Can I change my shipping address?
It is not guaranteed but if you let us know then essentially if we can we will!
Provided your item has not already been dispatched we can change your shipping address. Contact Us as soon as possible and we will always do our best for you.
Do you have parking?
All of our local shops are on High Streets and as such, whilst we have no dedicated parking, there are lots of options! For shop-specific advice please see Our Shops.
Why am I being charged for delivery?
We only charge for delivery if your order total is under £30. This is simply because we cannot sustain absorbing the costs of all orders, but we still want to offer a delivery option for all orders to maximise your convenience. We offer free Click-and-Collect on all orders as an alternative for smaller orders!
Is there an option for next day delivery?
We do not have an option for next day delivery. Though our quoted turnaround time is up to 2-5 working days we deliver all orders as soon as we are able to. Over 50% are next day but we do not like to guarantee due to the myriad of things that can go awry that are out of our control! If you urgently need an order it is best to give us a call so we can let you know when we are likely to get it to you.
I ordered a Leavers Hoodie but paid for delivery; will it be delivered to my home?
All leavers hoodies are delivered to the school as per the arrangements with the project organiser.
You are asked to select Leavers/Trips as your checkout option so that you avoid charge.
Whilst we try to automatically refund delivery charges for these items if you have opted for home delivery, if you have not received a refund or are worried then please get in contact so that we can refund this for you.
Which courier do you use?
For the most part we use our own local drivers. If your address is slightly further afield and/or falls outside out local loops then we will send your item tracked via post or via Yodel. It is always a good idea to write a delivery note just in case you aren’t in when we attempt to delivery and it cannot otherwise be left and to ensure you provide an up-to-date contact number in case of any issues!
My school isn’t listed as a delivery option; can I have my order delivered there?
All of the schools that give us their permission for your order to be delivered to school are listed as delivery options. If your school is not there, then your order will need to order to a personal address or for click-and-collect. We are not able to deliver to one of these schools unless it is uniform for said school. If you need a school to be your delivery address because you work there then please specify this in your delivery instructions. If you need the delivery to go to the school because it is a leavers or other project organised by them, please select ‘Leavers/Trips’ as your delivery option.
My order hasn’t arrived; what can I do?
Please check your emails; if your order is for a leavers hoodie or for a project then it will likely not have an option for home delivery and will be delivered to the school/group organiser as part of a group. Equally, if you have opted for personalisation on any items on your order then it can take a little longer than usual.
Our standard delivery turn around is up to 5 working days. If your order has not arrived to you within this time then please get in touch. It is more than likely we will have gotten in contact or left a message, but we will always be happy to update you on your order status.
