We are members of the Schoolwear Association and share their passion for ensuring businesses are run in a way that is sustainable and ethical throughout the supply chain.
We make an effort to stock Eco products wherever we can.
Eco products use Polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. Below, you can see how many bottles you will save for landfill by purchasing our Eco products!
Eco products also eradicate the need for crude oil, a finite and environmentally damaging resource causing pollution when used for production. They also require less energy to produce therefore.
Our suppliers are all Sedex members, meaning that they work to make their supply chain as transparent as possible so that their commitment to ethical practice is demonstratable.
Below we have listed our key suppliers with links where you can find out more information about their own ethical practice and sustainability initiatives.
One+All, a certified B Corp, are Planet Mark certified, Carbon Neutral and 100% employee-owned. This means that their commitment to employee welfare both at home and abroad is outstanding. Initiatives such as gifting water filters to workers in Bangladesh and making moves to alleviate period poverty demonstrate their dedication to making positive impact.
David Luke are pioneers in Eco materials, having won multiple awards for their sustainability initiatives. ISO and SCS certified they are committed making sure all employees are there by choice, are being paid according to local industry standards and have opportunities to develop their education through workplace apprenticeships.
Falcon are ISO accredited and, with their main foreign suppliers being fully vertically integrated – from receiving yarn to supplying garments – they have full control in implementing their ethical policies across the supply chain. They are dedicated to fair working hours, wages and conditions in their factories.
Banner is a certified B Corp committed to minimising their negative environmental impact. They are a Carbon Neutral business having offset 100% of their Scope 1,2 and 3 emissions. They were the first schoolwear supplier to set the Sedex 4-Pillar as their minimum audit standard for all of their suppliers to comply with.
William Turner combines UK manufacturing with textile recycling to minimise negative environmental impact. Through their Eco products they have saved approximately 1.5 million plastic bottles from going to landfill. To even further tackle the issue of industry waste, they have partnered with Newlife (The Charity for Disabled Children) so that redundant stock can be donated and not only avoid landfill but go to a great cause.
As well as using UK manufacturers where possible, our own warehouse is based in Watford meaning that goods have very little way to travel when distributed to and from our shops.
We distribute our goods using 100% recyclable mail bags. Our instore carrier bags are also 100% recyclable, and since it has become a legal requirement to charge for carrier bags, we have donated back every 10p purchase back to the charity Shelter, who help millions of people every year struggling with homelessness and unsafe housing. This means we can support the Eco initiative to encourage the use of reusable bags but can also generate some good from those we still need to provide.
We are proud of the quality of our products. All of our garments are designed to last to decrease overall cost to parents and to decrease the amount of throwaway items ending up in landfill.
Due to to their quality, we often find that even once grown out of they are still in a very good condition. This is great for those with siblings who can reuse garments.
We also encourage you to donate any worn uniform no longer needed either back to the school if they have a second hand sale, which often raises funds for the school. Recycling boxes for such items can be found in each one of our shops. For schools without second hand sales the reusable uniform is donated to charities such as Barnardo’s. Items that have reached the end of their life cycle are sorted for ragging.
As schools change their uniforms, we ensure redundant stock is sent to our partner charity The Kenyan Children’s Project, a charity who works closely with families and communities in Kenya to rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate vulnerable children so that they can thrive in safe and loving environments. Our donations allow children from poverty stricken areas a uniform of sorts, allowing them the same sense of belonging, inclusivity and professionalism that they could otherwise not access.
Our motto at BSU, as written on our company crest logo, is ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. This is a principle we whole-heartedly believe and one that is applied both internally and externally.
We are members of the Schoolwear Association and only use suppliers who value and have accredited audits ensuring the safe working conditions, fair treatment and fair pay of their workers. With our own staff, we foster a family atmosphere, providing lunch everyday for all, as well as dinners in our busy summer season!
As of March 2022 we have sponsored a child through Action Aid. We have been able to see two girls learn and grow through their initiative that works with those living in poverty, such as Mariama who lives in The Gambia, to achieve social justice, gender equality and poverty education. This sponsorship ensures that families can receive clean water, food, healthcare and education.
We take part in as many community and charitable causes as we can. We run an annual supper club quiz at Watford Girls school and involve ourselves with the Watford BID. We have taken part in Hitchin’s Hermitage Road day. We advertise and donate to our local schools and events such as The Highland Gathering in Harpenden, and have both involved ourselves in existing and ran our own initiatives to fundraise for causes including Shelter, The Peace Hospice and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
